Anna Arenz was born on February 4, 1830, daughter of Michael and Margaretha Abeler. Her father died in Prussia but her mother emigrated with her children and settled in Marytown, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Anna married Jacob Steffes on February 5, 1850, at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. He bought land in Marshfield and farmed. They had 11 children in 20 years, although Theodor and Peter died in 1868. Jacob died Jul 19, 1878 at age 56, an untimely death leaving many children fatherless. Anna filed for rights to administer his estate and settle debts, but a farm machine manufacturer challenged in court for repayment of $5,249.21. The value of land and all their belongings was about $1,000. Jacob had signed surety for a loan on mower equipment purchased by their daughter Gertrude's husband Peter Fox, with Wirtz and Gibson, on 11 Jan 1878. The estate challenge dragged on. Finally on April 19, 1880 a John M Miller signed surety on the contract and the claim was withdrawn. In the 1880 census she was farming and still had four minor children at home. She died on August 3, 1915, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, having lived a long life of 85 years. She lived with her son Michael's family in 1910. She was buried in St Cloud, Wisconsin.
