Henry was born on a farm in Eagle Township, La Salle, Illinois to John Arenz and Wilhelmina Nass on 6 September 1878. He was the youngest of ten children, three dying in childbirth. He lived and worked on his parents’ farm until sometime in the 1890's when he became a salesman. It was on one of these forays as a traveling salesman that he met and ultimately married Minnie V (Flowerree) Arenz in about 1906, based on the entries in the 1910 Census as being married for four years, and his occupation as a traveling liquor salesman in Los Angeles, CA. He continued to reside in Los Angeles until his death on 31 December 1923. His body was returned to Leonore, LaSalle County, Illinois for burial in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
