Biography

Raleigh was born 20 May 1892 in Rawley Springs, Rockingham County, Virginia. He was the son of Abraham Aray and Elizabeth Dedrick.[1]

In 1900 he was living in Central District, Rockingham, Virginia.[2] The household included Samuel McDoman 36, wife Lizzie McDoman 34, stepson Willie Ayrie 14, stepson Samuel Ayrie 11, stepdaughter Nellie Ayrie 10, stepson Raleiogh ayrie 7, son Clarance McDoman 4, and son Grover C McDoman 2. Samuel and Lizzie had been married 5 years. Lizzie was the mother of 7 children, all living. Samuel was a farmer.

In 1910 he was living in Ashby, Rockingham, Virginia.[3] The household included Jacob S Wright 39, wife Nelia Wright 38, son Wilber S Wright 10, son Roy S Wright 8, daughter Tracie M Wright 6 and servant Raleigh Airey 16. Jacob and Nelia had been married 11 years. It appears that Nelia was the mother of 8 children, 4 living. Jacob was a farmer. Raleigh was a farm laborer.

Addie Isabelle Morrison and Raleigh Arey were married 1 Dec 1916 in Marshall County, Iowa.[4]

He registered for the World War I draft in Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa.[5]

In 1920 he was living in Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa.[6] The household included Grover McDorman 21, wife Laura McDorman 21, brother Raleigh Arey 25, and sister-in-law Isabel Arey 24, nephew Donald Arey 2, nephew Edwin Arey 1 and brother William X Arey 34 and lodger Andrew Conlin 50.. Grover was a waiter in a restaurant. Raleigh was a construction laborer. William was a traveling salesman for a newspaper. Andrew was kitchen help in a cafe.

In 1930 he was living in Ashby Magisterial District, Rockingham, Virginia.[7] The household included Raleigh Arey 36, wife Addie I Arey 35, son Donald F Arey 12, son Edwin H Arey 11, son William H Arey 9, daughter Louise E Arey 7, daughter Margaret C Arey 4 and daughter Martha J Arey 3. Raleigh was a farmer.

In 1940 he was living in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa.[8] The household included lodger Isabelle Arey 46 and lodger Rollie Arey 48. Rollie was a farmer. In 1940 he was also enumerated in the census for Vienna Township, Marshall, Iowa.[9] The household included Donald F Arey 22, wife Maxine Arey 19, son Richard Arey age 0, and father Raleigh Arey 26. Donald was a farm laborer. Raleigh was a farmer.

He registered for the World War II draft in Zearing, Story, Iowa.[10]

He died 8 Aug 1967 in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California[11][12] and is buried in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Elida, Allen County, Ohio.[13]
