Biography

OCCUPATION: In 1833 he was a Labourer in Husbandry. By 1838 he was a Manganese Miner.

CENSUS INFORMATION: In the 1841 UK Census, he is listed as John Argall, a Manganese Miner aged 45 (rounded), not born in county. He is living with his wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters in the Village of Tinney, Lifton parish, Devon. (HO107/232/10, Folio 5, Page 7).
In the 1851 UK Census, he is recorded as John Argall, a manganese miner aged 50, born Redruth, Cornwall. He is living in Tinney, Lifton with his wife Elizabeth (#2315), son James (#2319) and daughters Susanna (#2281) and Mary (#2323). (HO107/1884, Folio 228, Page 13).

GENERAL NOTES: Church of England.

BIRTH: Census and other information makes his date of birth confusing. All range his birth between 1798 and 1804.

BAPTISM: Baptism is recorded in Perranzabuloe Parish records (BTs). (Perranzabuloe registers for 1800 are all destroyed, however, the BTs at Exeter reveals that John was actually baptised at St Agnes. [St Agnes was a Chapelry of Perranzabuloe until 1846. There are separate registers back to 1653. The present Church at Perranzabuloe was built in 1804 because of the encroachment of the sands had destroyed its predecessor. Each new Church was built further inland. Perranzabuloe baptisms took place at St Agnes from 8 Jul 1804 until 20 Jun 1805]. Clearly building work was in progress at the time of John's baptism).
