Biography

OCCUPATION: Printer Compositor.

CENSUS INFORMATION: Shown in the 1881 UK Census of St Agnes as Frederick J Argall, aged 3, living with his parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and maternal grandmother at home in Rosemundy, St Agnes. (Reference: RG11/2308, folio 115, page 22). In the 1891 UK Census, he is recorded as a Scholar, aged 13, living at home with his parents, sister (731) and brother (728). Reference: RG12/1828, Folio 87, Page 20. In the 1901 UK Census, he is listed as Frederick J Argall, a Printer Compositor, living in Kenwyn, Truro) in St John's Parish. He is aged 23, born in St Agnes and living with his brother William, sister-in-law, her father, and nephew at 3 Alma Terrace, Truro. (RG13/2222, Folio 51, Page 24). In the 1911 UK Census, he is listed as Frederick Argall, a Compositor aged 32 and born in St Agnes, Cornwall. He is living with James and Florence Blake at 75 Westfield Road, Caversham, Oxfordshire. (RG14/ Schedule 192).

GENERAL NOTES: Birth registered in GRO indexes for the Truro Registration District under reference 5c 148 for December quarter of 1877 .

BAPTISM: Baptism recorded in St Agnes Parish Registers (entry #358).

MILITARY: Served in World War 1 in France, where he was wounded in Dec 1917, and was invalided back to England. Name: Fredk J Argall Regiment or Corps: Manchester Regiment, Labour Corps, Regimental Number: 203338,684057.

Went back to France and was again more seriously wounded in the chest at Canal de Nore on 27 Sep 1918. Was treated at the American Hospital at Le Treport. On 16 Aug 1920, he was living at: 22 Newport Road, Reading, Berkshire, from where he wrote a (somewhat muddled) letter explain his interest in Argall Family History. He was still living there in 1923 when he was referred to in a letter written by Frederick Herbert Argall before his departure for South Africa in 1925.

In the WEST BRITON Newspaper, published on 13 Jan 1944, an entry reads: "The St. Agnes CEMS held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday at the Wayside. The Vicar presided; officers elected for 1944 included Mr F Argall as Chairman."

DEATH: Death is recorded in the GRO indexes for the Redruth Registration District in the December quarter of 1948 under reference 7a 150 (so he may have died in hospital there). Abode at time of death was Rosemundy Bungalow, St Agnes.

BURIAL: Buried in St Agnes Graveyard; burial inscription still existing; it reads; FREDERICK JAMES ARGALL of Rosemundy St Agnes. born 21 Oct 1877 died 22 Dec 1948. [Burial recorded in St Agnes Burial Register].

PROBATE: Probate 1 March 1949 to Samuel Blight, Baker. Estate valued at £1431 3s 2d.
