Biography

Sarah was born in 1886 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.[1][2] She was (about) the ninth child of William Argile and Agnes Witham. Sarah was chirstened on 1 Nov 1886 at Ilkeston, Holy Trinigy District, on the same day as seven others. Her father was listed as a shoemaker and their abode was in Bath Street.[3]

At the time of the 1891 census, Sarah was four years old, a scholar, living with her parents, seven older siblings and a baby sister in Station Road, Ilkeston. Her father was a shoe maker.[4]

Sarah's father William died in about 1897 [5] and in 1901 Sarah was 14, living with her widowed mother Agnes Witham and three sisters, Maria, Martha and Ada in Stamford Street, Ilkeston. Her mother was a lodging house keeper; three boarders lived with them.[6]

Sarah's mother Agnes Witham died in about 1907 [7], and at the time of the 1911 census Sarah (age 24) and her younger sister Martha (age 20) lived in Nottingham South East with a boarder, William Chambers, also 24 and from Ilkeston, a warper in the lace trade. Both sisters worked as cotton clearers.[2]
