At the time of the 1851 England census William was 6, living at 30 Woodend, Heanor, Derbyshire, with his parents William and Catherine and two younger siblings. [2]

In the 1861 England Census, William was age 15, an unmarried Coal Miner living with his widowed mother Catherine and four younger siblings in Loscoe Road, Heanor, Nottinghamshire. [3]

In 1871 England Census William was living at 33 North Street, Ilkeston with his widowed mother Catherine. William was unmarried, age 26, a Cord Wainer. [4] The date of the 1871 census was the night of 2 April 1871. [5]

William married Agnes Witham on 15th June 1871, at the Parish Church in Ilkeston. William was a bachelor, single, age 25, profession cordwainer and his father, William Argile was a cordwainer. Agnes was a spinster, age 18, and her father, John Witham was a FWK – frame work knitter presumably. William signed his name and Agnes made her mark. Witnesses were Robert Warren and Elizabeth Witham. [6]

In 1881 William Argile Head was 36, Boot & Shoe salesman, living with his wife Agnes at 91 Bath St, Ilkeston. They had five children living with them, John W (age 9, Scholar), Charles J (age 8, Scholar), Mary (age 5), Vincent W (age 4) and Catherine (age 2). [7]

[8]

William's wife Agnes appears in the 1901 Census as a widow, her youngest child 6 years of age, so he must have died between 1895 and 1901. [9]A William Argyle died in D quarter of 1897 in Basford, age 53 [10]

Research notes

William was the oldest of six children - his five younger siblings' births are all registered with mother's maiden mane Wallis. I cannot find the marriage of his father William to a Catherine or a Miss Wallis, nor the birth of this William with a mother with maiden name Wallis.
