Biography

England flag
William Argile was born in England.

All June Hind knew of William was his name and that of his wife, but she spelled it 'Argyle'. [1]

At the time of the 1841 census, a 25-year-old William Argile lived alone at Market Place, Duffield, Belper. No clues about his family! But he is listed as a shoe maker, as he was in later census returns.[2]

William (listed as William Argile Bowler) married Catherine Wallis at Bakewell, Derbyshire, on 10 Jun 1841.[3][4]

At the time of the 1851 England census William and Catherine Argile were living at 30 Woodend, Heanor. He was a shoemaker, age 35, with children William (6, b Belper), Thomas (3, b Heanor), and Fanny (1, b Heanor). [5]

William must have died between the conception of Mary Argile (age 3 in 1861 census return) and the date of the 1861 census, when his wife Catherine was a widow in Heanor. A William Argile died in Basford in 1860 S quarter, age 44 [6]. Three William Bowler's died in Derbyshire in the same time-period,[7][8][9], but none were the right age.

Research notes

A William Argile Bowler married a Matilda Hunt on 22 Feb 1836 in St Mary's, Crich, Derbyshire. Both were unmarried. Same man?[10] When William married Catherine Wallis in 1841, he was recorded as a bachelor.

Several William Argile's (or similar) were christened in Derbyshire at about the right time to be our William. I cannot find the birth or christening of William Argile Bowler.Humphrey-6461 19:36, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

There were five (or more) children - looking at the registration of their births, three have mother maiden name Wallis but the oldest is either Sowter or Ling. Humphrey-6461 17:37, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
