Roone Arledge had a profound impact on the development of television news and sports programming and presentation

Roone Pinckney Arledge, Jr. was born in 1931. He was an American sports and news broadcasting executive who was president of ABC Sports from 1968 until 1986 and ABC News from 1977 until 1998, and a key part of the company's rise to competition with the two other main television networks, NBC and CBS. He created many programs still airing today, such as Monday Night Football, ABC World News Tonight, Primetime, Nightline, and 20/20. He died in 2002. He developed the programming format of television sports coverage. [1]

He received numerous Emmy Awards. [2] He received a Disney Legends Award for his contributions to television sports and news coverage. The award biography starts,

Roone Arledge, president of ABC News, had a more profound impact on the development of television news and sports programming and presentation than any other individual. A 1994 Sports Illustrated ranking placed him third behind Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan in a list of 40 individuals who have had the greatest impact on the world of sports in the last four decades. In addition, a 1990 Life magazine poll listed Roone as among the “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century.” [3]

He was also inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. John Heard portrayed him in the 2002 TNT movie Monday Night Mayhem.
