Finnish statesman and hero of the Russo-Swedish war, Armfelt was a favorite (and rumored, lover) of King Gustaf III of Sweden and among his most powerful advisors.

After Gustaf III's death, Armfelt was discovered intriguing with Empress Catherine II of Russia. He was condemned to death and his property confiscated, but he made a narrow escape to Russia. He became the lover of the duchess of Sagan and seduced her daughter, Wilhelmine, who gave birth to their illegitimate daughter in 1801.

He returned to Sweden when King Gustaf IV attained his majority.
