Joseph was born in 1854.^[1] At a young age he began working in a coal mine with his brother, Robert. They were both killed in the terrible explosion in the Dukinfield Lakes Pit explosion 4 June 1867.

• burial recorded as 1866. There are several of the miners who died found in the England Death and Burials, 1538-1991 Microfilm Roll 1,655,875 that indicate the date of burial as 18 Jun-1866 in the index. Since there is no image available, believe that the date of 1866 was a consistent typographical error and should be 1867 as the date of the mining disaster is correct as well as the list of victims.
