Biography

John Armitage was born in Hoylake, Cheshire, England.

John William Armitage (1899-1976) was born on the 30th January 1899 ^[1] in Hoylake, Cheshire. He was the eldest son of a fisherman, John Armitage and Margaret Hinds. ^{[2] [3]}

The family lived at 4 Walker Street, Hoose when he was christened on the 2nd April 1899, ^[4] but had moved to 8 Lake Road, Hoylake before the 1901 census. ^[5] In the 1911 census, 13 year old John and his family lived at 59 Hawthorne Grove, Poulton cum Seacombe. ^[6]

He left school not long afterwards and followed in his father's footsteps. In the 1921 census the family lived at 36 Edgmond Street in Wallasey and John, although out of work at the time, was shown as the mate of general cargo barges, his employer being Liverpool Screw Towing and Lighterage Company. ^[7]

He married in early 1926 at St Paul's church in Seacombe to Dorothy Cannon Standish ^{[8] [9]} and remained in the area for a few years and started their family. Their first 2 sons were born in the Birkenhead registration district before a move north took them to the Waterloo/Crosby area to the north of Liverpool before the 1939 register was taken. It showed them living at a premises called Sandown on Haigh Road. John was still employed as a steam bargeman and they just had the 2 sons at that time. ^[1]
They subsequently added several more children.

John died in the Liverpool registration district in 1976. ^[10]
