Biography

Mary was the second of four children born to Mary Jane Alsop (nee Martin) and Joseph Armitage a gold miner from Clapham, England, and was the only one of the four to survive childhood. Information on Birth Certificate 15530 is: Date of Birth: 14 Jun 1863, Birthplace: Young, Name: Mary, Sex: female, Father: Joseph Armitage, Occupation: Gold miner, Father's age:32, Father's birthplace: Clapham England, Date of marriage: 17 Aug 1859, Place: Wagga Wagga, Previous issue: 1 female deceased, Mother's maiden name: Mary Jane Martin, Mother's age: 39, Mother's birthplace: Goldhirst (sic),Kent, England, Informant : Mary Jane (signed with "X") Armitage, Mother, Young, Nurse: Mrs. Morris, Registered: 29 Jun 1863 Young.

Sometime after 1867 Mary Jane eventually resumed her marriage with Spence Alsop, Mary was then known as Alsop and married under that surname. At the marriage of Mary to John Logan in the Holy Trinity Church of England Parsonage, Grenfell to John Logan on 3rd May 1882 William Cyrus Alsop gave consent. Mary was known as Aunt and Nana Logan by family members. Mary died at 68 West Street, Manly on 13th November and was buried the next day in Church of England Section, Waverley . Although Mary was well aware of her parentage, her father's name on her Death Certificate is shown as Joseph Armitage however her Mother's name is given as "not known". Death Certificate of Mary Logan states children of marriage: 2 Males, 2 females deceased.- Lynne Hammond.
