Biography

The daughter of Karl Wilhelm Armknect (1832-1918) and Susanna Ehlenn (1823-1890), Elise Armknect was born in Saint Louis, Missouri[citation needed] in 1860, residing there with her family.[1] Her siblings included:

  1. Susan Margaret Armknect (1860-1938)
  2. Jacob Charles Armknect (1865-1905)
  3. Louis Armknect (1867-1936)
  4. Helen Armknect (1869-1949)
  5. Catherine Armknect (1871-1940)

Elise married Anton Bickelhaupt, marrying in St. Louis on May 31, 1879[2] and having five children together. They made their home in Missouri Township, Missouri,[3][4] later moving to St. Louis, Missouri, where her husband worked as a blacksmith.[5]

After her lawsuit was dismissed in her neighbor's favor, and after having been branded as "heretic" by the presiding judge, Elise and her family moved west to California, residing in 1910 in Gardena Township, where her husband worked as a tool dresser for an automobile company.[6]

Elisabeth Bickehaupt passed away in Los Angeles, California[7][8] at the age of 53. Her remains were cremated there on April 6, 1915.[9][10][11] The Rosedale Cemetery Association received her on August 12, 1915.[12]

Research Notes

Someone on Ancestry uncovered a newspaper clipping about the resolution of a dispute between Elizabeth Bickelhaupt and one of her neighbers. Mrs. Bickelhaupt took her neighbor, a Mrs. Engler, to court, claiming that Mrs. Engler's ringing of sleigh bells in her yard disrupted Mrs. Bickelhaupt's spiritualistic gatherings. Judge T. F. Zimmerman ruled against Mrs. Bickelhaupt, ruling that her spiritualistic gatherings were, in his opinion, rank heresy and not religious practice and therefore not to be protected under the United States Constitution. Also testifying for the defense were Mrs. Bickelhaput's two daughters, Lulu and Elsie; the judge dismissed the case.[13]
