Biography

Irwin Armstrong was born in Ireland in about 1802. This is based on his declared age on the 1851 (age 49), 1861 (age 59) and 1871 (age 68) censuses (referenced below).

Irwin was recorded on the 1851 Canada East census with his first wife Sarah Mullen, and with 6 children.[1] All the children were born in Canada, so they must have migrated from Ireland by or before 1830.

He lost his first wife Sarah Mullen in 1854 and his second wife Elizabeth Cameron in 1856. On 26 Dec 1857, he married again, namely Margaret Dowler.[2]. Margaret had lost her first husband Thomas Whealy in 1856.

Irwin had a younger family than Margaret so the 1861 Census had four Armstrong children in the household - James, Francis, Irwin and Sarah - while the Whealy children were old enough to have moved along.[3] By 1871, only one descendant family lived (in Ormstown) with Margaret and Irwin i.e. Irwin's son Francis, his wife Isabella Stuart and their two children.[4]

Margaret passed away before 1880 - she was not on the 1881 Canada Census. In her absence, Irwin by 1881 had taken up residence with his son William in Mersea Township, Essex, Ontario[5], with nine grandchildren including his namesake Irwin.

Irwin passed away in 1884 in Ontario.
