THE LATE MR JAMES ARMSTRONG There passed away at the Mt Morgan Hospital an old and well known resident of Central Queensland in the person of Mr James Armstrong. He played a considerable part in the pastoral, dairying and public life of this district.
Born in Rockhampton he started work at an early age with Messrs Archer Brothers, of Gracemere, and remained with this firm for 31 years, except for one break to lift a large mob of Northern Territory bullocks to Muswellbrook, NSW. for the late Mr A. J. Cotton. This trip took 12 months.
The late Mr Armstrong played a big part in experiments with the solutions now used for killing ticks He built the first modern pug dip at the Archer cattle station (Archer), and although he never publicly claimed the credit he tried and proved a success inoculation for redwater as it is now used. He convinced Dr Hunt (Government Veterinary Surgeon) of the effectiveness of inoculation from a beast which had recovered from redwater, by a trial at Archer's Gracemere Station.
Mr Armstrong was a member of the Fitzroy Shire Council for 15 years, and will be well remembered for his work while chairman of the Shire, during the great bubonic plague.
On leaving Archer Brothers' about 1905 Mr Armstrong bought Ivy Bank, at Midgee, and worked it until the death of his wife in 1933, when he turned the place over to his youngest son, James, and has resided since with his other son, Roy at Dululu.
He is survived by two sons, Roy, of Dululu, and James, of Tungamull, and 14 grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs Kane, predeceased him.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Archers' private cemetery, Gracemere. It was largely attended by district residents. [5]
