1784: Francisco (age 65) and wife Antonia Planells Arnau sailed from Mahon, Minorca with their six children in 1768, as indentured farmers to help found the new Florida colony at "Los Mosquitos" , which Turnbull named New Smyrna*. During the long three month voyage to New Smyrna, their seventh child was born, a daughter, Antonia. Of the 1403 indentured colonists who departed Minorca for New Smyrna, 148 (11%) died during the stormy three month voyage. The ships' names and numbers of passengers were: Charming Betsy: 232 Henry & Caroline: 142 Elizabeth: 190 Friendship: 198 New Fortune: 226 The Hope: 150 American Soldier: 145 The Betsy: 120 TOTAL: 1403 All were Britishships. The ships were separated during storms and arrival times varied by weeks. Turnbull's wife was from Smyrna,Turkey, now known as Izmir." [3][4] The children were aged from 20 to 4.
