Note on name: Early records show his name as "Bernt Arneson" (daughter Annie's marriage record 1899[1]) and "Berut Arneson" (Iowa, County Births, 1880-1935). He later goes by "Barney". See this page for more information on his name in various records.
According to the 1900 census, he was born in February 1845, married in 1873 and immigrated from Norway in 1868[2].
Barney & "Sarah" had been married for 27 years when enumerated in the 1900 census. They were living in Decorah, Iowa with children Thomas, Bertha, and Cornelia[2]. Daughter Annie had married Julias Haas the previous year.
Naturalization
Note: There are two Bernt Arneson's who were naturalized in Decorah.
April 5, 1870 - Bernt (Brent) Arneson, age 29 born in Norway (est 1841).[3]
October 12, 1886 - Bernt Arneson, age 51 born in Norway (est 1835)[4]
Neither of these estimate dates match with the February 1845 date of birth given in the 1900 census.
