George Arnett was born Sep 1830 (recorded on FindaGrave as 17 Feb 1823) in South Carolina. His father was John Arnett, an Irish immigrant; his mother was Rebecca (MNU) from South Carolina. George moved with his family to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, sometime before 1850.[1] On 1 Jan 1852, he married Mary Rebecca Cavett in Bossier, Louisiana.[2] They had three children: two sons and a daughter. The oldest son and the daughter died very young, leaving only one child, James.
The first marriage did not last. In 1860, George moved to Red River County, Texas, where he married again, to Caroline Missouri Rodgers. [3][4] This is also the time when the War Between the States began, and George enlisted as a private in 21st Regiment, Texas Cavalry (1st Texas Lancers).[5] Caroline continued to live with her family in Clarksville (Red River County), until the war was over. During that time, George must have gotten some valuable experience during the wartime years, or he could have found time to finish studies begun earlier, because on the 1870 census report, his occupation is listed as “doctor.” By that time, he and Caroline have moved to Rusk, Cherokee County, TX. Living with them are J.C. Arnett, from George’s first marriage, and a son of their own.[6]

George Arnett may also have served with the first Texas Rangers, as his name is mentioned as one of those selected from the rosters of the war.[7][8]
Dr. Arnett died at the age of 50, on 15 Apr 1873, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Jefferson, Marion County, TX.[9] Note that the date on the FindaGrave memorial conflicts with birth dates on his census records.
Is this John Arnett the father of George Arnett? [10]
