Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Mary Arnett is a part of US Black heritage.

Mary Arnett's first possible appearance in the historical records is the 1830 census schedule of Reuben Arnett (abt.1784-1856) in Morgan County, Kentucky. She is probably the person listed in the Female Slaves 10-23 age category. This wide range places her possible birth year beween 1806 and 1820.[1][2]

In the 1840 census the household is in Floyd county, Kentucky. There is a female slave in the 10 to 23 age group category. When these two categories from 1830 and 1840 are compared, her range of possible birth years narrows to 1816 to 1820. Her son Randal Arnett is listed in the Male Slaves 0-9 category. If Mary was born between 1816 and 1820, then she would have been between the ages of 19 and 23 when Randall was born (please see Research Notes).[3][4]

(Please go to Document Links and Tables for tables showing her reported age and birth year based on that age.)

On October 31, 1845 Reuben Arnett, Sr. created a will in which he records Mary's and Randall's names and states that Randall's age is 7 years old. He bequeathes Mary and her son to his son Reuben Arnett Jr., upon the condition that he pay off all of his father's debts and that he must support in a decent manner his mother Susanna (Kilgore) Arnett, Mary and Randall Arnett (emphasis mine).[5]

The next census record, the 1850 Slave Schedule, has her listed as a 36 year old Black Female. (see Research Notes)[6]

Magoffin county was created in the year 1860 from parts of Floyd, Johnson and Morgan Counties.[7]

In 1860 Mary is in the household of Reuben Arnett Jr.. She is listed as a 45 year old Black Female in the slave schedule.[8]

In 1870 Mary is living with her son Randall Arnett on a farm among the adult children of Reuben Arnett, Sr. in Magoffin County census precinct 5. Her age is listed as 60, which would make her 15 years older than she was in the previous census. This is the first record which states her place of birth, it is listed as Kentucky. Their house is rented. She is not described as owning any real estate or personal property.[9]

In 1880 Mary and Randall are in Salyersville census precinct 1. Mary is now identified in the census record as Randall's mother. Her age is listed as 61, only one year older than the 1870 census. Both she and her parents are listed as born in Kentucky. She is not listed as single, married or widowed in the marital condition categories.[10]

In 1900 Mary is living by herself. Her son Randall Arnett is living with his wife Malinda Rowe and their children. She states that she is the mother of one child, who is living, and that she was born in November of 1824, gives her age as 75 and states that she is a widow. This is the first census where the place of birth for her and her parents is now listed as Virginia (see Research Notes). The house is rented.[11]

In 1910 Mary now lives in Lakeville, census precinct 10. She still lives alone. She is listed as 105 years old, single and she and her parents originate from Virginia. The house is rented. (See Research Notes).[12]

When she died Mary was buried in the Randal Arnett Cememtery. It has the following description in Find-a-Grave: The Randal Arnett cemetery is also known as the Bradley Arnett-Rowe Cemetery. It is an abandoned cemetery located at the mouth of Stonecoal on Negro Fork of Stinson Creek. Her death date is unknown at this time.[13]

Research Notes

  1. The 1810 and 1820 census records for the Reuben Arnett, Sr. household show that they have no enslaved people in those years.
  2. The 1830 and 1840 census records use an age category of 10 to 23 years as the second column for enslaved people. This is a range of 15 years. Mary is in this category in 1830 and 1840. If her age is being reported correctly, this means that she is likely to have been born in the five year period from the beginning of 1816 to the end of 1820. See the table below.
  3. The 1900 census raises interesting questions about Mary's life.
    1. Her statement that she is widowed. Who did she mary and then lose between 1880 and 1900?
    2. The change in place of birth from Kentucky to Virgina. If she was born in Virgina, then her origen will likely be with a household that migrated from Virginia to Kentucky after she was born. Reuben Arnett, Sr. did not have any enslaved persons in 1810 in Knox County, Kentucky or in 1820 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Determining when she was born will help find out where she was born. The letter "B" stands for "Possible Birth".
