Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Arnold was a Virginia colonist.

William was born around 1742 in Hanover County, Virginia (?) when it was a British Colony. His parents still need sourced.

The family moved from Virginia to North Carolina where William Arnold Jr. was born (?) and then on to South Carolina. The date the family moved to North Carolina is unknown. He fought in the Revolutionary War with the South Carolina Troops. He was a Private in the Grenadier Company , Second Regiment. This would put him in South Carolina by the time of the Revolutionary War. He joined the 2nd Regiment as a Private on 7/8/1775 and was discharged on 7/15/1778. The Grenadier Company was commanded by Colonel Issac Motte. Thomas Dunbar, Captain, Albert Ruox, 1st Lieutenant.

After the War, William remained in South Carolina for the rest of his life with his wife, Mary Arnold and family. William and Mary were the parents of William, Zachariah, Reuben, John and Samuel.

He died in 1815 and is buried in Mount Bethel United Methodist Church in Pickens County, South Carolina. [1] [2]

Research Notes

Is birth in Virginia or North Carolina??

Deed records show that William Arnold of Lauren Co. married a Mary. What her maiden name is still needs documented. The work of Karolyn Klaes on the website, The Arnold Family Question says that Mary Davenport did marry a William Arnold, but exactly which William Arnold has not been made clear. He is the father of the William Arnold that md. Mrs. Ann Wright.

The migration of this William Arnold is Virginia, to Randolph Co., North Carolina, to Laurens and Greenville districts in South Carolina.

Unsourced chart. This chart shows William Arnold to be son of Benjamin Arnold II (abt.1716-aft.1796) and Ann (Hendrick) Arnold (abt.1719-abt.1806), but their son, William Arnold (abt.1748-bef.1796) is shown with a different wife, death time and place. The Will of Benj. shows his son died prior to the father, while the Wm of this profile is still appearing in records long after that time, so they can not be the same person. Mary Davenport md a Wm Arnold, but the dates are not working for these couples named Wm and Mary Arnold to be the same couple. The born ca. 1745 would be too young to marry ca. 1755, approx the time that Mary Davenport did marry.

This William Arnold isn't the son of Benjamin Arnold of Greenville Co., SC. Benjamin Arnold's will, written 30 Jan 1796, says that his eldest son, William Arnold, is deceased and that he died in Bedford Co., VA.
