Biography

Robert Arnold was an Arkansan.

'Bobby' Robert Lee Arnold was born on 9 July 1879 in Baxter County, Arkansas, United States, son of Jefferson Arnold (1839–1907) and Rebecca J. Knight (1837–1914). He was their youngest child.[1][2]

Robert married Minnie Torrance on 15 December 1900 in Baxter County. He and Minnie would eventually separate and Minnie went to Little Rock with some of the kids as they left to pursue careers and education. Their children were:

  1. Obra Lee Arnold (1901–1983) .
  2. Lucy Jane Arnold (1904–>1987) .
  3. Ruth Irene Arnold (1906–1972) .
  4. Thelma Nadine Arnold (1909–2001) .[3]
  5. Lillie Gladys Arnold (1912–1987) .
  6. Edith May Arnold (1915–1916) .
  7. Mary Earnestine Arnold (1917–2013)[4][5][6]

He was a blacksmith. In 1917 he is described as being of medium height and build with black hair and brown eyes. [7]

He died in 1945 and is buried at Norfork Cemetery in Baxter County. [8]

Research Notes

Robert's birth year has been reported differently on different documents and his grave marker. But he does appear as an 11 month old baby on the 1880 census meaning he had to have been born in 1879. This will disagree with FAG. The Bible transcript below has 1881. Baxter Co., Arkansas. World War I Draft Card gives year of birth as 1880.

"Geneva just called and she says that Ruth and Thelma married Sneed [Note:this has been corrected based on a Bible and other records to GRUBBS brothers. The 1st name of one of the brothers was Smead] brothers Ruth married Horace Sneed and they did not have any children. She couldn't recall the name of Thelma's husband, she could remember it was a shorter name than Horace. Thelma had two sons. She recalled how good looking the Sneed men were. Lucy's son that was born out of wedlock was Marlin Arnold. They all moved to L.R. except Uncle Bob, and she can't remember if Lucy married down there or not. After Thelma was Lilly, not Berniece, and Mary was the baby. She married a Langhammer from L.R. He left Mary with three sons to raise, and one of them drown. Uncle Bob was the blacksmith in Norfork, and she isn't sure if Aunt Minnie ever came back to him or not. Orby, oldest, had three or four sons. They were good looking, too. The oldest was Maurice and I think there was a Billy".--email from Jaydine Morton on Jun. 21, 1999.

Obituary

ROBERT LEE ARNOLD

Funeral services for Robert Lee Arnold, 64, who died April 28, were held at the Norfork Methodist Church April 30, by the Rev. Clarence Wilcox. Burial was at Norfork by the Roller Funeral Service. He was a member of the Methodist church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Arnold of Little Rock; one son, Orby Arnold of Norfork; five daughters, Mrs. Lucy Emerson of Athens, Texas; Miss Ruth Arnold of Richmond, Calif.; Mrs. S. R. Grubbs of Fort Smith; Mrs. W. L. Brown of Little Rock; Mrs. C. W. Langhammer, Little Rock; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Jane Smith; two brothers, Joe and John Arnold of Norfork and thirteen grandchildren.

Notes: He and Orby's wife Gladys N. Arnold are the only Arnolds buried in Norfork Cemetrey. Or they are the only ones with marked stones when we (Vera) made the survey.

Orby and Glady's children listed in her obituary are: 4 sons: Maurice Dale, Donald J., Billy B., Eulon Carroll. Nine grandchildren.

Alice Torrance's Bible

Alice Arnold Torrance was a first cousin to Bobby Arnold. Her husband was, Joseph W. Torrance, brother to Minnie Torrance Arnold, the wife of Bobby. A third Torrance sibling, May, married Newt Arnold, another cousin to Bobby. Transcript was sent to me by Vera Reeves who was well known amongst Baxter and Izard County researchers for her efforts on local cemetery surveys and pulling up newspaper clippings greatly aided the genealogical efforts. Though she had that it came from Alice, the list of names included seems to be more about Bob and Minnie's family and less on Alice's. It is notably missing references to Alice's husband and two of her children. It may have belonged to Minnie and ended up in Alice's care after her passing. Or perhaps it was Robert's. The marriage of the youngest daughter, which was two years after his death, is not listed. And from there the information has been passed around.Morton-7125 01:48, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

1/18/2000 LaMyra, I was looking for some information in my files when I ran across this Arnold file. When I was running around asking people if they had old obituaries I could copy I ran across copies of a bible. I can't remember for sure but I think these copies came from Hazel Torrence [wife of Rudolph Torrence ]. On one page I've written Alice Torrance's bible. I found a marriage record for Alice Arnold 19 m. J. W. Torrance 24 on 13 Mar 1905.

Here is what was on these pages, you can sort it out. On one page under NOTES.
