Biography

Samuel was baptised on 8 March 1772 in Streatley to Francis and Mary Arnold.[1][2]

Samuel was a tailor and nondenominational christian.[3][4]

Samuel married Martha Finch of Little Wittenham on 6 June 1798 in Aston Tirrold.[5][6] His marriage was witnessed by John Gale and Joseph Finch.[7] The bondsman for his marriage was Richard Roe, yeoman of Aston Tirrold.[8] Martha was buried on the 22nd of October 1801 in Aston Tirrold.[9]

James Arnould was apprenticed to Samuel on 20 September 1798 in Aston Tirrold.[10]

Samuel witnessed the marriage of Sophia Harriss and Benjamin Blackman on the 20th of January 1800 in Aston Tirrold.[11]

Samuel married Elizabeth Clare of Newnham Murren on 21 August 1802 in Newnham Murren.[12] She passed away in November 1810.[13]

Samuel witnessed the marriage of Joseph Clare of Newnham Murren to Esther Moss on 10 October 1805 in Oxford St Ebbe.[14]

Samuel married Martha Martin on 7 October 1813 in Ardington.[15] His marriage was witnessed by Thomas Curtis and Martha Dickens.[16]

In 1832, Samuel polled for Mr William Seymour Blackstone as MP of Wallingford.[17]

In 1841, Samuel was living in Aston Tirrold, with: Martha Arnould, his wife; Martha Arnould, his daughter; Ann Arnould, his daughter; and William Arnould, his son.[18]

In 1851, Samuel was living in Aston Tirrold, with Martha Arnould, his wife, and Martha Arnould, his daughter.[19]

Samuel died in 1853 in Aston Tirrold.[20] He left the following will on his passing:

This is the last Will and Testament of me Samuel Arnould of Aston Tirrold in the County of Berks Tailor — I devise that a pair of Grave Stones be placed over my Grave to the Memory of my late Wife and myself as soon as may be after my decease[.]

I devise and bequeath all my freehold and leasehold property situate and being in Aston Tirrold aforesaid and elsewhere to my Son John Arnould absolutely subject to and charged with the payment of an annuity or clear yearly sum of Twelve pounds Sterling to my present Wife Martha or her assigns during her life if she shall so long continue my Widow unmarried and shall not cohabit with any other Man — the said annuity to be paid and payable by four equal quarterly payments in every year and the first quarterly payment thereof to be made at the end of three calendar months after my death[.] And also subject to and charged with the payment of the sum of Twenty five pounds Sterling to my Son William Arnould within one calendar month after the death or second marriage of my said Wife or her cohabitation with any Man[.] And also subject to and charged with the payment of the sum of Five pounds Sterling to my granddaughter Elizabeth Arnould Simson if and when she shall attain the age of Twenty one years but without any interest in the mean time[.] And also subject to the payment of any money which may be owing from me at the time of my decease or mortgage of the said property or any part thereof in exoneration of my personal estate therefrom[.] And I declare that the annuity hereinbefore given to my said Wife shall be in bar and satisfaction of her dower out of my real estate[.] And I give to my said Wife and her assigns such powers of entry and distress and Sale upon the said freehold and leasehold property for recovering the said annuity if the same or any part thereof shall be in arrear for the space of Twenty one days as are given to Landlords for recovering Rents reserved on common demise[.] I give to each of my Children Elizabeth Simson, Martha Arnould and Ann Bennett the sum of one pound to be paid within a month after my death and I give to my said sons John and William all my Wearing Apparel equally and to my son William my Watch and to my son John my Clock and the Bookcase with glazed doors in my Dwellinghouse[.]

And I give all my household goods and furniture in my Dwellinghouse (except the bookcase) to my said Wife during her life if she shall so long continue unmarried and shall not cohabit as aforesaid and immediately after her decease or second marriage or cohabitation as aforesaid which shall first happen I give the same household good and furniture to all my children who shall be then living equally[.]

And I give all my Stock and implements in trade and trade fixtures and all the residue of my personal Estate and effects whatsoever not before disposed of until my said son John absolutely subject to the payment of my just debts (Except Mortgage, debits if any) and my funeral and testamentary expenses[.] And I appoint Mr William Charles Pittman of Goring in the Country of Oxford Brewer and my said son John Executors of this my Will[.]

In Witnesses whereof I have hereunto signed my name this twenty first day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and forty eight.
