● Text of biographical sketch: [4]
"J. Claude Arnold, a prominent young farmer of the vicinity of Burkittsville, was born on the farm which he now occupies on April 19, 1883, the youngest child and only living son of Joshua and Annie (Heffelbower) Arnold. (See sketch of Joshua Arnold, deceased.)
"Mr. Arnold's education was begun in the public schools of Burkittsville. He entered Juniata College, at Huntington, Pa., but on account of illness, was not able to complete his course there. He was obliged to return home; but in the following year (1901), he entered the Maryland Institute, at Union Bridge, Carroll County, Md., where he studied for a year. Returning to his home, he took entire charge of the farm; his father having died in 1897, his oversight of its management had practically begun at that time. In 1904 he bought the homestead, upon which he still resides. It contains 170 acres of fine arable land, lying along the South Mountain road, one-half mile from Burkittsville. The dwelling was built by his father in 1883; it is a stone edifice, two and a-half stories in height. The barn, erected about 1882, is 106 x 50 feet in dimensions, and is one of the best buildings of its kind in this section. In character and abilities, Mr. Arnold possesses all the elements of success. He is energetic, progressive, and persevering, and is already enjoying many of the rewards of a faithful performance of duty.
"J. Claude Arnold was married May 2, 1905, to Miss S. Grace, daughter of W.S. and Emma Jane (Wrenn) Flook, of Knoxville, Md. Their children are: 1, Austin F.; 2, Dorothy Grace. Mrs. Arnold is a member of the Reformed Church in the United States. In politics, Mr. Arnold is strongly Democratic."
