Biography

Henry is the son of Benedict Arnold and Margaret Mansfield. [1]

The 31 Jan 1855 edition of the Morning News reported: "Henry Arnold entered the King's Service after his father's defection and was Lt. of Cavalry in the American Legion. He accompanied his father to St. John and was employed in his business. He slept in the warehouse near Lower Cove and lodged there the night the building was burned. He lived afterwards at Troy, N.Y. with his aunt Hannah and was engaged in mercantile pursuits. At a subsequent period he moved to Canada where he is now a man of property. He received half pay and a grant of lands from the British Gov't. "

The claim that Poe the famous author was a descendant of the traitor Benedict Arnold was often made by the author, but it has been widely refuted. Henry Arnold, the father of Edgar Allan Poe’s mother Eliza, died in England ca. 1789. Eliza’s mother, Elizabeth, brought Eliza to the United States in 1796, to Boston. This is noted in the 2023 book “Mystery of mysteries: the death and life of Edgar Allan Poe” by Mark Dawidziak, pg. 34-41. Elizabeth, E.A.Poe’s maternal grandmother, later married one Charles Tubbs. E.A.Poe’s mother, Eliza married (1) Charles Hopkins and (2) David Poe, E.A. Poe’s father, following Hopkins’ death in 1805. Henry Arnold, his wife Elizabeth, their daughter Eliza, and David Poe were all actors. Charles Tubbs was a musician.

Is there any prove of relationship to Edgar Allan Poe? This link says there is no proof and I've looked through other sources. Henry Arnold has two wifes? Hannah and Elizabeth in some bio's. David Poe has no real evidence. Please help

Henry Arnold, born 1772 is the son of Brig. Major Benedict Arnold (famous American Revolutionary) born in Norwich CT and first wife, Margaret Mansfield of New Haven CT. Henry Arnold is the grandfather of Edgar Alan Poe. Henry's dau. Elizabeth is the mother of the famous American author, Edgar Alan Poe. Edgar Alan Poe is the grandson of Benedict Arnold. I had never known of this connection between a famous American author and the famous Revolutionary hero, Benedict Arnold.
