  • Ancestry.com - profiles there include every English b/m/d record that includes "Samuel Arnold;" immigration records linked to are actually for Samuel Arnold-204 who settled in Massachusetts; AGBI listing is also for New England Arnold.

I have been unable to confirm that the birth record included herein is actually for this Samuel Arnold. There is also no confirmation/evidence that Samuel is the son of Samuel Arnold and Mary Thornton. The only source that has been located is the record of a lawsuit following the death of Samuel Arnold as cited above. (Strutton-11 on 19 Dec 2021)

After spending several days searching for information for this man on behalf of the US Southern Colonies Project, I could find nothing other than the source which refers to a lawsuit regarding the settlement of Samuel Arnold's estate following his death in 1674. No documentation has been presented, or found by me, to confirm that Samuel is the son of Samuel Arnold and Mary Thornton. I was unable to locate any document, will, etc., that names his wife or children. No record has so far been found to show when he immigrated to the Virginia Colony.

In other words, I give up. If anyone else cares to try, good luck.

I appreciate your efforts in trying! The Arnel's/Arnolds book by Howard Leon Arnold is one I have at home. The authors were members of the AFAS and were drawing on its research. I used it to pull the christening record for this Samuel Arnold. He covers English records believed to be relevant in the introductory pages II-IX.

What connects this Samuel to Samuel and Mary Thornton is the 1634 London Visitation which shows Richard's (the haberdasher) line including son Samuel and then grandson, Samuel. Richard left a Will with many bequests, including one to Samuel Arnold, grandson, the messuage or tenement called King's Head and L100.0.0. So I believe the Richard to Samuel to Samuel b.1611 is correct. That this last Samuel is the same one that dies in Virginia is less evident.

What has changed over the years is Y-DNA testing. I know I had an email from an Arnold man when I first came on WT. I'd have to go back and look for it. But I believe I understood that they are now seeing the markers for Richard fall into place and that this line is being confirmed via y-DNA. But, yes, we need better information than that to explain what is going on.

It is the connection from Samuel and Mary Thornton Arnold that really needs to be made. And I would like to find some information showing when Samuel Arnold arrived in Virginia. Does your book show any connection between Samuel Arnold of New Kent County and the Anthony Arnold who is all over the early records?

Does the Arnel's/Arnolds book give any sourcing for the Virginia Arnolds/Arnalls?

I don't think there is any sourcing in it that isn't already here. The book doesn't claim to prove that Samuel d. 1674 is the father of Anthony hung in 1677, only that the evidence makes it seem likely that that is the case given that they were both in New Kent in the same time period. If Samuel of New Kent is the same as the grandson of Richard, then he had an aunt that married an Anthony and that offers an explanation for that name being used in the family. It just seems to be the conclusion that people keep coming back to. I don't see anything in the book that tells us when Samuel arrived in Virginia.

We can show that Samuel and Mary Thornton had a son Samuel b. in 1611. That their son went to the colonies, I don't think we have.
