Biography

Abraham, the son of Abraham Arnold, was born about 1795. He passed away on 24 Jan 1879. His date of death is taken from his headstone. His year of birth is estimated as 1795 from census records and a newspaper account.

He married his first wife, Tamer (maiden name unknown) before 1820, based on the birth of her first child.[1] Tamer's date of death is unknown, but Abraham remarried to Elizabeth Sliker about 1930 based on the birth of their first child, Mary Catherine Arnold, 10 Jan 1831. This comes from various family pedigree charts, and Martha Arnold Lutz lists her parents as Abraham Arnold and Elizabeth Sliker on her birth certificate.[2]

Two Abraham Arnolds, likely father and son, appeared in both the 1820 and 1830 censuses for Newport (in 1830, one is listed as Jr.).

In 1820, the younger Abraham and his presumed wife are both 16-25 and there are two children in the house under ten, a boy and a girl.[3]

In 1830, Abraham Arnold, Jr. was in his forties. He presumed wife was in her 20s. At home were Tamer's children--a girl 5-9 (Elizabeth), and four boys (Abraham, Hiram, John and and George).[4]

Abram, 55, and Elizabeth, 41, appear in the 1850 census for Newport in a mixed household that includes Abram, 26, the son by Abraham's first marriage, and his wife Esther, 21, Abraham's sister Mary, 57, and a servant James Dougherty.[5] The children of Abraham and Elizabeth still at home are Jacob, 16, Rebecca, 14, William, 7, Susan, 4, and Martha, 1.

In 1860, Abram Arnold, 65, and Elizabeth, 51, are living in Slocum with William, 15, Susan, 13, and Martha, 10. Catherine (Arnold) Simms and Zura Simms are living next door. Slocum was formed from from Newport in 1854.[6]

Abraham, 74, and Elizabeth, 60, again appear in the 1870 census for Slocum township.[7] Also in the household is grandson Zura Arnold, 18.

In 1875, a reporter passing through Slocum wrote, "I came to Abram Arnold's, a man 80 years of age who came here about 45 years ago. Mr. A is in good health and has been a patient sufferer for years."[8]

The Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys offers and alternative year of death as 1880, although Elizabeth is widowed by the time of the 1880 census enumeration and his headstone clearly says 1879.

"The History of Slocum-Slocum '76" states that he lived from 1792-1879. It describes him as the son of Revolutionary War veteran Abraham Arnold Sr. "They lived on a farm in the area of the Willis/Tarnecki/Majewski farms."[9]The book also notes that Abraham Arnold was an early trustee of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Slocum, dedicated 1 Dec 1860, which became known as the Slocum Union Church.[10]

His headstone in Stairville Cemetery records his age at time of death as 86 years, 5 months and 10 days.[11] Working back from his reported death date of 24 Jan 1879, this would put his date of birth at 14 Aug 1792, which explains the reported 1792 year of birth. This is highly suspect because it is inconsistent with multiple census records and it would mean he was born one month before the reported birth of his sister Mary.

Children

The Wyoming and Lackawanna Valley states that Abraham and Elizabeth (Sliker) Arnold had seven children.

  1. Mary Catherine Arnold, b. 1831, m. Zura Sims
  2. Jacob Arnold, b. 26 Jan 1834, 25 Nov 1916, m. Ellen Vandermark, removed to Iowa
  3. Rebecca Arnold, m. Isaiah (L.M.) Jones
  4. Lizzie Arnold
  5. William Arnold, b. 8 Aug 1843, d. 17 Mar 1926, m. Catherine Slider
  6. Susan Arnold, b. 1846, d. 18 Nov 1915, m. (1) Lyman Engle and (2) William Alden Fairchild
  7. Martha Arnold, m. John Lutz

Research Notes

  • A partially sourced family history prepared by Don Wilson and handed down to Craig McLaughlin. gives a birthdate of 14 Aug 1792. That would be too close to the 24 Oct 1792 birth of his sister Maria. The source of the date is not clear.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abraham by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abraham:
