Biography

Orren was born in 1834, Lennox and Addington Twp., Ontario, Canada. He was at the Battle of Bull Run during the U.S. Civil War, and discharged in October, 1861, because he was diagnosed with Typhus. But, it was the wrong diagnosis because he lived to be quite old!

After the Civil War (he fought for the Union), Orren lived in Detroit, Michigan, for a while and married Mary Elizabeth Vickery, in 1866. He then moved to Chatham, Ontario, Canada, where he ran a store and post office in Appledore. He was baptized in the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints on, 21 Aug 1887, Louisville, Kent, Ontario. In 1895, he moved to Namao, Alberta, Canada, where he also ran a store and post office located 12 miles north of Edmonton.

He was married three times, and had three sons and five daughters. He died on November 20, 1926, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, at the age of 92, and was buried in Beechmount Cemetery.

The information below is excerpted from, "A Cameo of the West," told by his daughter Mary Arnold Pearse, and compiled by Bertha M. Speers, published by the Namao U.C.W., and F.U.A. Local No. 539.:

Orren Baldwin Arnold, of Chatham, Ontario, came west to Alberta in 1893, in search of land. Returning to Chatham in 1895, he sold his place, loaded a railway car with necessary effects, and started west. His son (also) Orren and three of his older daughters preceded him out there by three of four years. His wife Mary Vickery Arnold, along with his youngest twin daughters, Mary & May followed his arrival later around 1896.

After first arriving Orren rented a house from a Mr. Will Craig for three months, then moved the homestead near Cardiff where he lived in a sod-roofed shack which leaked worse inside than out when it rained. The nearest neighbor, Charles McLaughlin, who lived a mile away.

Orren kept a store and Post Office at Namao for a short while (Dec. 1898-1899), later moving to Edmonton where he lived to the ripe old age of 92, passing away in 1926.
