Biography

David (Arnot) Arnott was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

David Millie Arnot aka Arnott was born on 17 August 1806 in Dysart, Fifeshire, Scotland and his parents were William Arnot and Euphemia Imray. [1]

He married Isabella Smith on 14 Aprtl 1827 at Dysart. Fifeshire, Scotland [2]

David was convicted of Embezzlement in the Perth Court of Justiciary, Perthshire, Scotland and sentenced to be transported to the New South Wales Colony for a term of seven years . He was one of 290 convicts transported on the "Earl Grey", leaving from Scotland on 27 July 1838 and arriving at Sydney on 21 November 1838 [3],

Through the efforts of Caroline Chisholm, his wife Isabella was able to follow him with the four younger of their six children, Euphemia, John, Thomas and Robert, arriving at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 20 August 1847 aboard the Barque "Asia" [4]. Isabella and her children aren't not named on the Passenger list but three of her children are "Euphe Arnot (18), John Arnot (13), Robert Arnot (9)" are all named when added to the Sick List and the dates when removed from the the Sick List. Isabella was also on the Sick List as Mrs. Arnot but incorrectly transcribed in the following source as on the Sick List: 8 April, Jm. Arnot (33), Diarrhea, off the Sick List: 9 April; which fits with the transcribed extract from the Dr's Journal Report as follows "Folio 2: Mrs Arnot, age 33, emancipist, sick or hurt, Diarrhea, put on sick list 4 April 1847, discharged from sick list 9 April 1847. Thomas doesn't appear to have been ill but was 11 years old when he travelled with his mother and siblings. [5] and her oldest sons William and David arrived in 1848 [6]. Their two older sons, William and David immigrated the following year, arriving at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 14 February 1848 aboard the ship, "Sir Edward Parry", six months after their mother and siblings had arrived [7].

He died on 8 January 1872 at his home at Melville Street Off Lake Macquarie Street, Newcastle at the age of 65 years [8] [9] [10].

It is likely that he was originally buried at Honeysuckle Point Cemetery, and his remains later moved to the family grave at Sandgate Cemetery [11].
