Dorothy's biological mother was Elizabeth Ann (or Anna Elizabeth) Shumate. Dorothy's biological father Francis Marion Davis died of TB. Ann left Dorothy and her brother Donald with her mother Virginia Flint Shumate, while she went to a neighboring town to find work. Ann's sister called Child Services on the children.
Ann tried for years to get her children back.
James Donald and his sister Dorothy were adopted by EH and Eleanor Arnott after the death of their father Francis Marion Davis who died of TB in 1941.
