Albert Arnott was born in 1862 in Ireland, the son of the soldier William Arnott and Mary Jane (Murphy) Arnott. By 1871, the family had moved to Stoke Damerel, Devon where Albert's father had been restationed.
In spring 1874 at the age of twelve, Albert emigrated to New Zealand with his father William, stepmother Henrietta, siblings Jemima, William Henry & Caroline, and stepbrother Robert John, arriving in Wellington on 9 Jul 1875.
