William Arnott, son of Elizabeth Arnott, was born on August 30, 1877 in South Leith, Scotland[1]. His mother Elizabeth was 24 years old and worked as a domestic servant. His father was not named in his birth record.

In the 1881 Scotland census, William lived with his grandmother Isabella Arnott in Muthill, Perthshire[2]. In the census his name was "William nephew", but the age and place of birth match William Arnott, Isabella's grandson. William's mother Elizabeth worked as a domestic servant in North Leith in the 1881 census.

On June 3, 1881, William's mother married George Saunders. After their marriage, William used Saunders as his surname and George was listed as his father in his marriage record.

In the 1891 census, William was 13 years old and lived with his mother, step-father, and 5 siblings in South Leith[3].

In the 1901 census, he was 23 years old and worked as a plumber[4]. He lived with his parents and siblings in Liberton, Edinburghshire.

William married Mary Nathaniel Bowie, daughter of William Bowie and Mary Nathaniel, on July 17, 1903 in Edinburgh[5][6]. They had 6 children together:

  1. Susan Nathaniel Saunders (1905-1992)
  2. George Saunders (1907-1990)
  3. Elizabeth Arnott Saunders (1909-2000)
  4. William Bowie Saunders (1911-2000)
  5. Charles Saunders (1914-____)
  6. Mary Nathaniel Saunders (1916-2014)

Their first two children, Susan and George, were born in Edinburgh. William, his wife Mary, and their two children emigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1907, arriving in New York on October 28, 1907 on the ship "Caledonia"[7]. His occupation listed on the ship manifest was plumber, and both William and his wife Mary could read and write. His stepfather George was listed as his relative in Scotland.

His daughter Elizabeth was born in Santa Barbara in 1909. In the 1910 United States census, William lived with his wife and children in Santa Barbara, California[8]. His brother-in-law John Bowie also lived with them. William worked as a gardener.

William's wife Mary travelled with their children back to Scotland in 1911, where she gave birth to their son William. Mary and the children returned to California in December 1911[9]. William and Mary had two more children in Santa Barbara, Charles and Mary.

In his World War I draft registration card, William was 41 years old and lived in Santa Barbara[10]. His occupation was superintendent and his wife Mary was his nearest relative.

In the 1920 census, William lived with his wife and 6 children in Santa Barbara[11]. He was a gardener who worked in parks. He had submitted his naturalization paperwork.

By the 1930 census, William and his wife were naturalized American citizens and he owned his own home in Santa Barbara[12]. He worked as a plumber and 3 of his children still lived at home.

William was pre-deceased by his wife Mary in 1936. In the 1940 census, he lived alone in his home in Santa Barbara[13]. He was 61 years old and a widower.

He passed away on December 28, 1961 in Santa Barbara at the age of 84[14]. He was buried in Santa Barbara Cemetery[15].
