Biography

James Airey was born in 1830, calculating from age at death.

James married Ann Shaw in 1855 in Eston, Yorkshire, England. [1]

James arrived in New Zealand in 1864 aboard the Anne Dymes with his wife Anne and son Thomas. Left London 13 October 1863 and arrived in Nelson 1 January 1864. [2]

He was also known as James Smith. In New Zealand the name Airey was immediately changed to Aroa.
