Biography

William was born 17 Oct 1816 in Napoli Township of Cattaraugus County, New York to James and Martha Bristoe or Margaret Manchester.[1] In 1838 he married Charlotte Davis of Livingston County, New York in Cattaraugus County.[2] On census records she is listed as Native American. [3]They moved to Midland Township of Midland County, Michigan where their first child Aaron was born 04 Oct 1838 in Midland. William had 15 children, 12 with Charlotte and three with his second wife Rowena Hurd. William was a farmer and remained in Midland County all of his days. His children with Charlotte are: Aaron (1838 - 1845); William (1840 - 1864). He was killed-in-action at Alexandria, Virginia; Sarah Ann (1842 - 1882); Henry C. (1844); James (1845 - 1923), moved out to Oregon; Mary L. (1846 - 1911); Daniel Edward (1849 - 1929), moved out to Oregon; Charles Joseph (1851 - 1916), moved to Avebury, Saskatchewan, Canada via Wisconsin and Oregon; Levi (1853 - 1855); Henry Eli (1855 - 1862); Edward (1855 - 1922); and Edmond (1858 - 1863). Charlotte died 1 April 1860 in Midland.[4] William next married Rowena Hurd in 1861 in Midland County and they had three children: Henry E. (1862 - 1862); Etta L. (1862 - 1862); and Willard W. (1863 - 1866). William passed away 13 May 1873 in Midland and is buried in the Arrance family cemetery in Midland City.[5] Rowena moved to Genesee County and married George Miles 14 Mar 1874 in Flint, Michigan. She died 14 Mar 1914 in Tuscola County, Michigan.[6][7]

  5. Find A Grave, memorial 19389477. The Arrance Cemetery is located in the City of Midland,on Waldo Court, just off Old US 10 (Saginaw Road) in Mapleton. It is a small square lot overgrown with lilac bushes. The city says they feel it was just north of this, and the stones moved to the hill. We only found three of the stones readable, they were laying all in a pile in the center of the lilac bushes on the hill. Was read by Cheryl D.Speaker and Margaret Wegner on May 1,1999.
