Biography

In 1749, in South Carolina, Mary Arrington married William Wesley Gilreath, a son of George Gilreath and Mary Murray. William performed civil service duties as a constable in Wilkes county, North Carolina, during the American Revolutionary War. At least three of her sons were soldiers during the American Revolutionary War. Applications for membership in the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution have been made by the descendants of William and Mary. [1] Children of Mary and William include:

  • William Gilreath, Jr. born April 28, 1763, in Granville, North Carolina, died before May, 1836, in Wilkes county, North Carolina, veteran of the American Revolutionary War [2]
  • John Gilreath, born circa 1753, in Granville county, North Carolina, died in December, 1802, in Wilkes county, North Carolina, veteran of the American Revolutionary War [3]
  • Alexander Gilreath, born November 15, 1755, in North Carolina, died before February, 1854, in Wilkes county, North Carolina, veteran of the American Revolutionary War [4]

Mary was mentioned in her husband's Will, written in 1794 and witnessed by Charles Crenshaw, Stephen Pearson and Elizabeth Camel. William died May 6, 1795, in Newberry county, South Carolina and is buried in the Crenshaw-Finch cemetery.

Researchers Notes

Mary (Arrington) Gilreath's Find A Grave memorial indicates that her parents were Arthur Arrington Sr (1710-1801) and Mary West (1713-1801) [5]

James McGehee at 16:23, 24 November 2018: Removed parents from this profile with the following comment: "There are no sources for the relation to Arthur Arrington and Mary (West) Arrington. Source documents do exist that tie Mary (Arrington) Whitehead to these parents"
