Biography

Rose dite "Rosalie" Arseneault [Arseneau] was one of three known children of Alexandre Arsenault and Marie Renée dite "Renotte" Boudrot (or Boudreau), & was born around 1768[1] Her birthplace may have been the Magdalen Islands, since her parents were evidently wed there around 1764.[2]

Rose "Rosalie" became the first of the two wives of Prospère Poirier sometime in 1789, in the parish of Malpèque PE. Researchers have counted a full dozen offspring of the couple.[3]

Rose was interred on 22 Dec 1813, although the date of her actual death is missing from the damaged Rustico parish record at that point. Her age was entered as 45.[4] (It would have been very shortly before the burial, if the traditional routine practice of the time was followed.)

Propère Poirier remarried on 21 Apr 1815. He and his second wife, Ludivine dite "Hedwige" Aucoin, produced 7 children together, from 1817 to about 1827.

The following material may also be useful to researchers.

The following is an English translation (with original name spellings retained) of the subsequent French paragraph:

On April 1815, following three banns of marriage between Prosper Poirier widower of the late Rose Arceneau of Malpec of the one part, and Ludivine Ocouin grown daughter of Jean Ocouin and Rosalie Bernard of Chascampec of the other part and with the parents' consent and having discovered no impediment to the said marriage, we the undersigned missionary priest for these parts have received their mutual consent to marry and have given them the nuptial blessing according to the prescribed form of our holy mother church in the presence of Joseph Arceneau, Amant Galant, Fidèle Galant who with the newlyweds did not know how to sign [their names]. - Beaubien miss, prst"[5]

Original French text... - Beaubien prtre miss."[6]

Child

Names are spelled in the following entry exactly as they are in the source documents:

On September 22nd 1812, in Rustico, an adult son (name could not be interpreted for transcription) of Prosper Poirier and deceased Rose Arceneau married Elizabeth Arceneau minor daughter of....[7]This is likely Laurent. born 1790 per Placide Gaudet.[8]

Death

Names are spelled here exactly as they are in the source documents:

Arceneau, wife of Prospère Poirier died the day prior to her burial [sic]. The burial record is incomplete but it is in 1813 between December 6th and 22nd. Present were Joseph, Cyprien and Jean Arceneau. among several, none could sign.[9]

Parentage clue

Rosalie Arsenault is related to one of these couples: Pierre Arseneau and Anne Boudrot or François Boudrot dit Manne and Jeanne Landry per the marriage record of her daughter Bibienne Poirier as follows.

Names are spelled here exactly as they are in the source documents: On April 26th 1815, in Rustico Prince Edward Island, Melème Arceneau, the adult son of deceased Cyprien Arceneau and .... Bourg, married Bibiane Poirier minor daughter of Prosper Poirier and deceased Rose Arceneau. All parties of Malpec. Witnesses: Groom- his brother and brother-in-law Cyprien and Placide Arceneau (these are transcribed as father and stepfather, I believe this was an easily made error between père and frère in the writing of the day. His father is deceased per the record). Bride,- her father Prosper Poirier; also Joseph Arceneau and several others, none of whom could sign.[10]

The record shows a " troisième degrée simple de consanguinité," which would indicate the couple share a common set of great-grandparents. Prosper Poirier, her father, does not share ancestors with Melème Arceneau. To see their currently updated kinship links, view the WikiTree portraits of the personages involved,

Also, to round out and reinforce Marcel W. Landry has her as a child of Alexandre Arseneau and Marie Rene Boudrot. Alexandre is a nephew of the Pierre Arseneau noted above.(Bourque-573 13:54, 12 September 2023 (UTC))

  2. Bernard 2019, p. 50, citing 2016 personal communication from scholar Georges Arsenault. Bernard also reports there, citing research by both S.A. White & Georges Arsenault, that Alexandre had been living on today's PEI in 1752, although he had been born at Beaubassin, and that Renée had been baptized at the then capital of today's PEI (that is, Port Lajoie, in what was then Île-Saint-Jean). Given that the British conducted a major expulsion of Acadians from that island & today's Cape Breton in 1758, & continued the policy officially into 1763, it seems highly likely that both of Rosalie's parents were in the Magdalens as refugees. It is unknown when they returned to what is now PEI. Incidentally, Bernard also mentions that Renée had previously wed Paul Richard around 1746.

Rosalie was removed from father Pierre Arseneau. However, following the relationship notes above, "she should be related to Pierre Arseneau", the recnetlly removed father Alexandre is a nephew of Pierre Arseneau. Could you check that out and replace the parents. Thanks, Cindy

I did what I could manage for the moment. As I wrote in the Bio at the top, much more editing is required. (Also for the profiles of her parents.) Jean Bernard's work has the additional info. I hope to be able to remember to get back to doing this soon, but I may be traveling for a bit.

Thank you, John, that's very helpful. I'll keep it in my tickler and check back with you sometime later. Cindy

Looks good, John. Should Renee Boudrot mentioned at her parent in the first paragraph be added as her mother? Cindy

Thought I had added the mom - must have left the profile before saving that!
