Biography

Jean Arseneau is one of twins.
Easily Confused: See the text for details.

Jean, twin of Pierre, was born about 1728. He was the son of Charles Arseneau and Cécile Breau.

He married Madelaine Boudrot, daughter of Claude Boudrot & Judith Belliveau 3 Nov 1750 at Port Lajoie, Isle St. Jean, Acadia.[1][2] [3] His brother Pierre and Madeleine's sister Judith were married the same day.

Children:[4]

  1. André Arseneau (abt.1751-) Ile Saint-Jean
  2. Jean Arseneau (abt.1752-) Ile Saint-Jean
  3. Basile Arseneau (abt.1754-bef.1785) Ile Saint-jean
  4. Marie Arseneau (abt.1764-) b. 10 Jun 1765, Ile-St-Jean d. 8 Feb 1841, Sauzon, Morbihan, France (Age 75 years)

In 1752, Jean and Madeleine with their 8-month-old son André were recorded on the La Roque census at Malpec. They were living next to his twin brother Pierre and his wife Judith, and close to his parents Charles and Cécile. [5] Two more sons were born on Ile Saint-Jean: Jean about 1752 and Basile around 1754.

They were on a list of prisoners in Fort Cumberland (Beauséjour) in 1763 with their sons Jean, Basile and Louis (listed as Louise). [6]

On 11 November 1765 Jean and his sons appeared on a list of Acadians in Miquelon who had arrived from Beauséjour, and were destined to go to France aboard the ship Les Deux Amis. No wife was listed. [7]

He was present at his sister-in-law Judith's burial in February 1766, in Nantes.

He passed away on 8 September 1768 at Belle-Isle-en-Mer, France.[4]

Research Notes

Although Landry has Louis Arseneau (b Dec 27 in Restigouche) [8] PRDH shows that Louis was born to Jean Arsenault, son of Jacques Arsenault and Marie Poirier. and to Madeleine Boudrot daughter of Francois and Jeanne Anne Landry.[9][10](Bourque-573 23:31, 14 January 2022 (UTC))

There were three very similar marriages in Port LaJoye on November 3, 1750:

  1. Pierre Arseneau m Marie Judith Boudrot (dau of Claude and Judie Belleveau)
  2. Jean Arseneau (son of Charles) m Madeleine Boudrot (dau of Claude and Judith Belliveau)
  3. Jean Arseneau (Jacques and Marie Poirier) m Magdeleine Boudrot (Francois and Jeanne Landry)[11]
