Biography

Harry was born in 1882. He is the son of Richard Arstall and Ann Cooper. He was 5'4" and weighed 145 lbs according to his military records. Harry had grey eyes and fair hair. He was a Methodist.

In November 1916, Harry was thrown from an automobile and broke his left forearm, which was still somewhat weak by the time of he enlisted in the CEF.

In 1917, Harry was single and a farmer near Mullingar, Saskatchewan. Harry enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on March 14, 1917 in Saskatoon and joined the 232nd Overseas Battalion. According to his attestation papers, he had previously served 2 years in the Royal Engineers. He had a systolic heart murmur but was overall in good health at the time of his medical examination.

The 232nd Overseas Battalion set sail from Halifax aboard the S. S. Northland for England on April 18, 1917 and landed in Liverpool on April 29. He was quarantined in the segregation camp at Bramshott. Harry was moved into the 15th Reserve Battalion with much of the rest of the 232nd Overseas Battalion, on April 29. Harry trained at Longmoor Range and landed in France on September 19, where he joined the 3rd Canadian Labour Battalion (largely made up of Manitobans). On November 21, he was transferred to the 4th Canadian Labour Battalion. From March 4-20, 1918, he was granted leave to the UK. His battalion was redesignated as the 2nd Canadian Infantry Works Battalion on March 28. On July 8, Harry was granted permission to marry. On September 13, he was transferred to the 4th Canadian Infantry Works Company. He married Ettie Maud Budd on January 25, 1919 in England.

Harry embarked on the S. S. Metagama from Liverpool on May 24 and arrived at Quebec on June 2. Harry was discharged from the CEF on June 7.
