The International Genealogical Index (IGI) has a record of marriage extracted from church records for "William Arterburn" and "Jane Wilkinson," in the English port city of London, June 21, 1676. The surname of this "William Arterburn" as here recorded was almost certainly a phonetic spelling, likely resulting from the illiteracy of this couple, either of the surname, "Otterburn," or of an unknown European surname that was Anglicized in terms of the prevailing London English pronunciation of that era (trap-bath split, broad A and non-rhotic R, etc). This "William and Jane Arterburn" have never been found in any subsequent record. (Arterburn, 2010)

The “Arterburn” surname and Family line in America began with Peter Atterburn/Arterburn (1711-1803) who was an orphan, and whose surname was phonetically derived in Colonial Maryland from his unwed mother’s maiden surname, Jane Weatherburn/Wedderburn, The Arterburn surname in America did not exist prior to the lifetime of Peter Arterburn. Peter's first wife/companion in Colonial Maryland, the mother of his eldest son, William Arterburn, remains unknown. (Arterburn, 2023)

"William and Jane (Wilkinson) Arterburn," whoever they were, could not possibly have been related in any way to the Arterburn Family line in America, and may not have even been identified by this surname spelling subsequent to their marriage.

The attributed middle name of "William Smith Arterburn" as originally published in The Arterburn Cousins (pp. 371-372) was later discovered by the authors to be a misnomer, which was subsequently corrected by the authors in an errata statement (cf. FamilySearch Library). There is no tradition of or evidence for a middle name for William Arterburn, Sr.
