Mary (Arthur) Tait was born in Scotland.

Mary Arthur (1814-1892) was born on the 15th September 1814 [1] in Weisdale, Shetland (parish of Tingwall Whiteness and Weisdale). [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] She was the daughter of Mitchell Arthur and Helen Robertson. [2]

She married a mariner, George Tait, in Tingwall parish on the 23rd January 1838. [9]

In the 1841 census she lived in the settlement of Garth in Nesting parish with a young daughter, Agnes, and other members of the extended Tait family but George was absent and likely away at sea. [3]

By 1851 they had moved to Houlscarpa, still in Tingwall parish, and the family had grown. to include 5 children. Mary, or Molly, as she was shown was described as a crofter. Once again, George, was away and Agnes Arthur, Mary's sister lived with them, shown as a servant [4]

In the 1861 census the family lived in Holland in Nesting parish. daughter Agnes, now 20 years old, was married and still living in the household. George was home and shown as a crofter. [5]

In the 1871 census, George & Mary now lived in Lerwick, on Charlotte Lane, and Mary was described as a knitter. Most of the children had left home leaving only Ellen the youngest with them. [6]

After a series of small moves between successive censuses there then followed a much larger move south to England for the couple. By the 1881 census they had moved to Park Road, Toxteth Park in Liverpool, Lancashire where they lived with her daughter, Ellen, now married with her own family. Her husband George had found work locally as a watchman. [7]

They moved again before 1891 to Morton Street, Toxteth Park where they once again lived in the household of her daughter Ellen. George had retired by then. [8]

She died there in February the following year, 1892 [1] and was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery on the 25th February 1892. [10] [11]
