Jane Arthur was born in 1797 to James and Jenny (Pike) Arthur.[1][2][3] She married Richard Crossman, and when widowed became an Innkeeper, running the Herring Arms Inn, in Brentor. Jane died in 1869.[4]
There are three Jane Crossman deaths registered in Devon for a Jane born about 1795 plus/minus 2, one registered East Stonehouse, one Tavistock and one Bideford.
As the Richard / Jane Crossman couple are in the Tavistock registration area, and that Jane is not obvious in the 1871 census it is more likely she is the 1869 death registered Tavistock.
The Bideford Jane death in 1875 is for a Jane married to a John Crossman, a mason. She appears in the 1871 census as a widow, living with her daughter Sarah. Husband John is with her in the preceding census records, 1861, 1851 and 1841.
