Joseph Artis is a part of US Black heritage.

Joseph Artis was born about 1840[1]-1841[2] in Logan County, Ohio[2]. He was the child[3] of Angeline Newson and James Artis.

He stood about 5 foot 7 inches (1.7m) tall with brown eyes, black hair and brown complexion when he enlisted with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company K of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[4] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 5 May 1863 from Urbana, Ohio. He went missing on 20 February 1864 at the Battle of Olustee. He was found or made his way back to camp, but died of his wounds on 25 February 1864.[1]
