In the 1865 New York State Census, John and Mary were living with their son Leonard.

I, John Artlip of the town of Almond in the County of Allegany and State of New York, considering the uncertainty of human life and being of sound mind and memory blessed God for the Same, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following viz: I give and bequeath to my son Leonard B. Artlip twenty six acres of my farm (26) the west end of the same bounded on the west by the west line of said farm and running east far enough to make the said quantity of land. I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane Carnes Eleven acres of my farm it being and laying east of the piece given to Leonard, and bounded on the west by Leonards east line, and running east far enough to contain Eleven acres and no more (11). I give and bequeath to my Daughter Julia Pinchin the balance of my farm it being Twenty three acres and bounded on the west by James Carnes’ east line, it being the east end of my farm. I give and bequeath to my Grandson Chauncey Artlip on his arriving at the age (21) years, the sum of Forty dollars in money, the same to paid in proportion to the number of acres by Leonard B. Artlip and Jane Carnes and Julia Pinchin each, and I give and bequeath to my Granddaughter Olive Artlip the sum of Forty dollars in money on her arriving at the age of Twenty one years to paid in the same way as to Chauncey, and I give and bequeath to my Grandson Stephen Frasier the sum of Thirty dollars in money on his arriving at the age of twenty one years to be paid in the same manner as Chauncey and Olive Artlip. And lastly, I hereby appoint Leonard B. Artlip of Almond my sole executor of this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this the 20th day of January one thousand Eight Hundred and seventy. his John X Artlip mark 8
The above instrument consisting of one sheet was now here subscribed by John Artlip, the Testator in presence of each of us and was the same time declared by him to be his last Will and Testament, and we at his request signed our names thereto as attesting witnesses.
