Biography

Emma was born on 6 Oct 1866 in Idaho City, Idaho to William Arts and Christine Manemann.[1] Family history indicates that she was born in a covered wagon on the Idaho frontier. Rain leaked on her and caused permanent deafness.[2] The Arts family claimed that Emma was the first white child born in the Idaho Territory, but records at the Idaho Historical Society show Eliza Spalding born 15 Nov 1837 to be the first (researched by Nancy Christensen). She was the first of 8 children (Emma, William A., Frank Herman, Anna Christine, Joseph Clemence, Louise, Augusta, Mary Agnes).

She was a member of the first class in the first school in Carroll county.[3]

Emma never married. She lived at home with her mother Christine until her mother's passing in 1924. Then she went to live with her sister Augusta and her family and remained there until her accident.[4][5]

Emma fell down the stairs and fractured her back on 12 Nov 1945 and remained in the hospital until her death on 3 Jul 1946 in Carroll and was buried in the family plot at Mount Olivet Cemetery (formerly St. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery).[1][6][3]
