Roger Arundell was born sometime after 1474 and before his father's death on 1 October 1485 (when his oldest brother, Sir John Arundell was aged 11).[1] His father was known as Roger Arundell of Lanherne.[1] The Lanherne branch of the Arundell family was a pre-eminant Catholic family with extensive property in Cornwall, England,[2] and the family's main seat in Cornwall was Lanherne manor house in the parish of Mawgan in Pydar,[3] so Roger may have been born there.

Roger's father, Sir Thomas, was knighted in 1483, attainted in 1484 for rebelling against King Richard III of England and died on 1 October 1485,[3] leaving Batteshorn (Battishorne[3]) in Devon to Roger.[1]
