Freddy was born in 1854 in Liverpool, England. He is the son of William Arundell[1] and Elizabeth Clarkson. His father William died in 1859.[2] Freddy appears in the 1861 census for Liverpool with his brother John V (Vickers) Arundell, both listed as stepsons.[3]
Fred emigrated to Norfolk Virginia in 1874.[1] The records show he married Ida Culpepper of North Carolina in January 1877.[4] A daughter Mae was born in December.[5] By 1880 Ida is back home in North Carolina with her daughter Mae[6] , and Freddy is in New York City, living in a boarding house and packing oysters.[7]
Freddy thrived in New York in the oyster business. Trow's NYC directory lists him as manager of the business at 27 Hubert, 1882-5, 1888.[8]
Fred's brother John, an iron moulder, emigrated to New York with his family in 1886. The 1890 Brooklyn City Directory lists the Arundell Bros. ironfounder at 317 S 3rd - James F Arundell and John V Arundell.[9] This business prospered.[10]
Meanwhile Freddy married Sara Elizabeth Gale and they had a son Wiliam born Dec 31, 1888.[11] William died young, most likely before Sara and Fred embarked on an overseas trip in 1904. Sara died in 1908.
Heartbroken, Fred embarked on a trip to England in 1910. On board he met Edith Cohoe who accompanied her father, David Rubidge, who had also recently lost his wife. Fred and David became fast friends and they joined together in a motor trip around England.
When the Cohoe family joined Fred Arundell in New York City, they acquired, renovated, and lived together in the house known as "Stoneycrest" (see image, 1917 photo by Fred). This delightful home was built of 18-inch thick granite, was on 3 acres of ground, and overlooked the Hudson River. "Uncle Freddy" as he was known to the Cohoe family, passed away in 1932.
