Engineer Sir Ove dies at 92 SIR Ove Arup, the acclaimed Newcastle-born civil engineer responsible for structures as varied as the Byker Viaduct and the Sidney Opera House, has died aged 92. The viaduct won the Concrete Society's 1960 civil engineering category award. Other North-East projects included the footbridge over the River Wear by Durham Cathedral, built in 1967 and a wooden footbridge at Wylam in Northumberland. Made a CBE in 1953, Sir Ove was knighted in 1971. He was awarded the the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1966 and in 1973 the Gold Medal of the Society of Structural Engineers.
