Son of Arved Arvedsson 1754–1826 (Marriage: 30 September 1810 in Linköping, Östergötland, Sverige) and Christina Sophia Uhr 1781–1849
"In 1841 a young Swedish immigrant named Peter (Pehr) Arvedson arrived in America and made his way to Chicago. While in Chicago, he made the acquaintance of a Dr. Andrew Cornish who was on a business trip and was one of the first settlers in Algonquin, Illinois. Dr. Cornish offered him a job as a hired hand on his 250-acre farm outside Algonquin and he readily accepted the offer. During his tenure there and influenced by Dr. Cornish’s religious persuasion, he became indoctrinated into the Episcopal faith. At this time, Dr. Cornish’s granddaughter Hannah came to stay with them to help care for her ailing grandmother and Peter was quite smitten by Hannah. Peter and Hannah later married and had a family of 12 children.
During this time the Episcopal Church was in a movement to service immigrant communities that sprung up throughout the Fox River Valley west of Chicago. In 1850 Peter was appointed a lay reader by an Episcopal bishop and during that summer started services at his farm. Throughout his ministerial career, which eventually evolved into the priesthood, Peter traveled in his horse and uncovered buggy more as a missionary servicing these immigrant communities inclusive of Richmond, McHenry, Crystal Lake, Marengo, Harvard, Woodstock, Blevins Mills, Dundee, Elgin, Barrington and Wilmot, Wisconsin. He was also instrumental in the establishment of various churches such as St. Johns in Algonquin and St. James in West Dundee to name a few.
Rev. Peter Arvedson died on November 22, 1880, at the age of 58 years. He had been in ill health for several months but had refused to slow down, wishing to "die in the harness" to service his flock. The funeral services were held in St. John's in Algonquin on Thanksgiving Day, and he is buried along with his wife Hannah and their eldest son Arved in the Village of Algonquin Cemetery. From 1863 to his death in 1880 he never received as much as a dollar in regular salary or pledge from any parish or mission." Source: A great-great grandchild of Rev Peter Arvedson
