Biography

Name

  • Llywarch ap Trahaearn [1]
  • Llywarch ap Trahaearn ap Caradog ap Gwyn ap Gollwyn[2]

1070 Birth

Llywarch flourished from 1109 to 1124 and is said by Weis (AR7, 176:4) to have died about 1129. [2] Boyer also states that Llywarch's son Robert flourished during the same dates, 1109 to 1124.

Boyer estimates the birth of the grandson Robert as 1130. The son Robert, to flourish in 1109 would need to be born, say, 1090, and Llywarch's birth might well be, say, 1070. [2]

Parents

Llywarch was the son of Trahaearn ap Caradog. Boyer observes that "it is alleged that he married Nest ferch Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, but there is no proof of this.[2]

Llywarch's father was Trahaearn Arglwydd Penfro, born about 1070 in Arwystli, Trefaldwyn, Cymru[3]

Trahaearn was the rightful ruler of Arwystli, the region around Llanidloes, but in 1075, when Bleddyn ap Cynfyn died, he seized Gwynedd. Gruffudd ap Cynan of the old Venedotian house disputed his claim immediately, and defeated Trahaearn ap Caradox at Dyffryn Glyngin in Meirionydd. However, a subsequent victory by Trahaearn at Bron y Erw forced Gruffudd into exile in Ireland.[2]

Location

Arwystli was a medieval cantref in mid Wales. It was located in the headland of the River Severn and was chiefly associated with the Kingdom of Powys. However, it was heavily disputed between Powys, Gwynedd, and the Norman Marcher Lords for hundreds of years; it was the scene of many skirmishes between them. It became part of other jurisdictions by the Laws in Wales Acts beginning in 1535. [4]

Siblings

The issue of Trahaiarn and Nest were five sons and a daughter, Annest, wife of Bernard Newmarch. The sons were

  1. Llywarch. Llywarch, the eldest son, had issue by Dyddgw, his wife, daughter of Idnerth ab Cadwgan ab Elystan, three sons and two daughters:
    1. Robert, ancestor of the Lords of Cedewain, etc.;
    2. Meredydd;
    3. Iorwerth;
    4. Gwladys, consort of Prince Owain Gwynedd, by whom he had issue, Iorwerth Drwyndwn, Prince of Wales, Cynan, Maelgwn, Gwladys, and Gwenllian, wife of Owain Cyfeilioc;
    5. Mabli, wife of Ieuaf ab Niniaf ab Cynric ab Rhiwallon ab Dingad ab Tudor Trefor. According to the Golden Grove Book, Eva, the daughter of Adda, son of this Ieuaf (or Adda ab Awr ab Ieuaf), was wife of Ieuaf ab Cuhelyn ab Rhyn ab Einion Evell.[5]
  2. Meurig
  3. Gruffudd
  4. Ednowain. Ednowain, was progenitor of David ab Hoel Vychan ab Hoel ab Ieuaf ab Ednowain, who left an only daughter and heiress, Eva, wife of Grono or Goronwy of Henvach, by whom she was mother of a daughter an heir, Eva, wife of Cuhelyn ab Rhyn ab Einion Evell. [5]
  5. Madog.

Marriage

Boyer states that Llywarch married Dyddgu ferch Iorwerth ap Cadwgon ap Elystan Glodrydd [2] [6] Boyer notes that Dyddgu also married Iestyn ap Gwrgan ab Ithel. [7]

Stewart Baldwin, however, believes that Llywarch's wife is unknown. Baldwin notes that Bartrum (p. 354) gives Dyddgu ferch Iorwerth ap Cadwgan ab Elystan Glodrudd in this position, but his only source is the late visitation LD.ii.24, which names Dyddgu as the mother of another child of Llywarch, but not of Gwladus (#5). In addition, the sources given by Bartrum for Dyddgu's alleged father Iorwerth ap Cadwgan are all late 16th century or later, so Iorwerth's existence is also uncertain." Therefore in Baldwin's opinion, this link should be regarded as dubious. [1]

Based on Baldwin's research, I have de-linked Dyddgu as Llywarch's wife.

Flourished

Stewart Baldwin indiates that Llywarch ap Trahaearn was active from 1109 to 1124. [1]

Issue

Children, listed by Bartrum. [2]

  1. Gwladus, married Owain Gwynedd
  2. Robert, married Dyddgu. Robert ap Llywarch ap Trahaearn ap Caradog.[8] Robert ap Llywarch [3] He flourished from 1109 to 1124. [2] This would make him an adult at 1109, so he would have been born, say, 1090.
  3. Elen, married Seisyll
  4. Iorwerth
  5. Maredudd
  6. Madog

Based on the research of Stewart Baldwin, cited in the biography, I have removed Dyddgu as Trahearn's wife. A link to her profile remains in the biography to make reconnecting her easy if appropriate.
