Avis was born in 1924 in Atlantic, Cass, Iowa.[1] She was the daughter of Charles Asay and Avis Petty.
She moved with her family to Saskatchewan, Canada when she was young.
She married Ray Simmons in April 1953 at Grace Methodist church in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.[2] They had children.
She passed away in 2009. She was buried in Colonsay cemetery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.[3]
